Registration figures November 2024: VW Golf defies the crisis
The monthly look at the car registration figures in Germany shows the developments on the car market. In November 2024, the recovery trend has continued since September 2024. All information on the latest figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority.
Every month, the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) publishes the registration figures for passenger cars in Germany. A total of 244,544 new passenger cars were registered in November 2024. Compared to the previous month, this results in an increase of 5.4%, but a slight decrease of 0.5% compared to the previous year.
- Recovery trend from September continues
- E-cars account for almost 15% of new registrations
- Volkswagen grows slightly and remains the brand with the largest share
- Toyota with strongest growth of import brands
After September 2024 already represented a slight recovery from the crash in August, the trend is now continuing in November. Although November 2024 does not reach the figures from 2022 and 2023, the registration figures are only 0.5% behind compared to the previous year. The car market is therefore recovering somewhat and could stabilize towards December.
Recovery trend for registrations
After the dramatic slump in August across all vehicles, signs of recovery are now showing in the following months. There is also a slight improvement in the picture for electromobility. The newly registered 35,167 electric cars are only enough for a market share of 14.4%, which is a decline compared to the previous year, but the share seems to be stabilizing around the 15% value.
A total of 296,223 vehicles were newly registered, almost 4.2% more than in October 2024 and 3% more than in November 2023. This means that there is a chance that the number of new registrations by the end of the year will still be higher than the figures from previous years. Despite the crisis situation at Volkswagen, the end of the traffic light in Berlin and the rather weak subsidy for e-cars, there are still stable figures for registrations.
Until the end of the year, the chance of greater growth is slim, after all, the government would have to introduce further bonuses, for which there are currently no majorities. After the new elections in February, however, the situation could change quickly.
In addition to electric cars, hybrid drives also increased to a market share of 38.7%, of which 8.4% of new registrations are plug-in hybrids. The intermediate stage to the transition to full electric mobility therefore continues to enjoy great popularity.
Volkswagen remains the frontrunner, strong growth at Toyota
At the top of the most popular brands, not much has changed despite the crisis. Volkswagen dominated November with 47,610 registrations and a market share of just under 19.5%, followed by Mercedes (25,869 | 10.6%), BMW (22,464 | 9.2%), Skoda (18,448 | 7.5%) and Audi (17,445 | 7.1%). With the exception of Audi, all five brands were able to score points with growth in November, Skoda even with 16.5%. The Ingolstadt-based company lost 19.2%, continuing its negative trend from October.
Although Skoda remains the strongest import brand in Germany with its registration figures, they have been overtaken by Toyota in terms of growth. The Japanese company recorded growth of 104.5% and thus came to 10,262 registrations and 4.2% market share. Among the other import brands, Peugeot, Volvo and Seat were also able to grow, while Tesla, Hyundai and Kia had to give up market share. At Tesla, there was even a decline of over 50%.
Despite their success, the Japanese are still behind other import brands such as Skoda or Seat, but with the increasing popularity of hybrid engines, they could continue to increase their share in the future.
Most popular models in November 2024 -VW Golf and T-Roc with strong growth
The most popular model among registrations in November 2024 was the Volkswagen Golf with 8,890 new registrations. This corresponds to growth of 18.5% compared to the previous year and secures the Wolfsburg-based company almost 20% of compact class registrations.
The facelift of the Golf 8 continues to be well received by customers and the Golf remains a perennial favourite in the German market despite the VW crisis and the price increases in September.
Things are not going badly for Volkswagen in other segments either. In addition to the Golf, numerous Volkswagen models were also able to assert themselves in other segments. The Passat, T-Roc, Tiguan, Touran and the Transporter were the most popular models in their respective segments. The T-Roc in particular recorded a strong month, with growth of almost 43% compared to the previous year. Compared to the previous month, there were four changes in the segment winners: Toyota Yaris (110% growth over the previous year!), BMW 5 Series, Porsche Taycan and Peugeot 3008.
Among the electric models, the Skoda Enyaq maintains its crown with 3,066 registrations, while the Toyota Yaris continues to dominate the category among hybrids. When it comes to plug-in hybrids, Volvo is ahead with the XC60. Overall, alternative drive systems recorded a slight growth of 5% compared to the previous year and thus account for just over half of the new registrations with 130,670 new e-cars, hybrids, gas cars and fuel cell cars.
